GTA man faces drug trafficking charges in North Bay

A 27-year-old Toronto man is in custody after a late-night traffic stop in North Bay, Ont., led to the seizure of a quantity of drugs – including fentanyl – and counterfeit currency.

The North Bay Police Service said the incident began on Monday at about 2:20 a.m., when officers conducted a traffic stop of an electric bicycle being driven on a sidewalk in the McIntyre Street East area.

The individual was found to be in breach of prior release orders issued on Jan. 7 and a probation order issued July 2.

“The suspect attempted to evade police but was arrested following a brief pursuit,” police said in a news release on Tuesday.

Drugs, counterfeit money seized

During the arrest, officers seized a folding knife and a quantity of drugs. A subsequent search at North Bay police headquarters led to the discovery of additional drugs, a second folding knife, counterfeit currency and cash.

Officers seized 17.9 grams of fentanyl, 8.6 grams of crack cocaine, 7.7 grams of crystal methamphetamine and seven oxycodone pills.

The accused is charged with four counts of drug trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of counterfeit money, two counts of failing to comply with a release order and one count of failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police highlight community safety impact

Insp. Scott McFarlane of North Bay police linked the arrest to improved community safety.

“Thanks to the quick actions and keen observations of our patrol members, the accused was apprehended and harmful drugs were kept from reaching our community,” McFarlane said.

“This is an example of the dedication and vigilance by our members that greatly contributes to the safety of our community.”
