Greater Sudbury police standoff ends with 4 arrests, drugs, replica firearm seized

Greater Sudbury police have three people in custody after a weapons complaint in Capreol on Friday.

A report of a gun pointed during an early-morning confrontation led to a day-long police containment in Capreol on Thursday, ending with four arrests and the seizure of drugs and a replica firearm.

Sudbury police were dispatched to a residence on Dennie Street shortly after 1 a.m. on Jan. 2. Investigators said the complaint alleged an interaction between several people where one person pointed a gun at another before leaving the area.

Police later received information that the suspects had returned to a home on the same street.

“Around 11:20 a.m., members of the emergency response unit arrived on scene and set up containment of the building,” said the Greater Sudbury Police Service in a news release Friday evening.

The standoff saw a gradual resolution. Just after noon, three individuals exited the residence and surrendered to police without incident.

“However, officers believed that additional parties involved in the incident were still inside,” said police.

The municipal police force initially advised the public of the heavy police presence in the area in a social media post shortly before 2:30 p.m. and advised residents to stay away from the area.

As officers continued the containment of the scene, police were granted a warrant to enter the residence.

A fourth individual exited the residence around 4 p.m. and was taken into custody.

The police service then entered the home and confirmed no one else was inside.

“(In) a search of the residence, officers located a replica handgun, 71.5g of suspected cocaine with a value of approximately $7,500,” said police.

Officers also seized $2,300 in cash.

Shortly after 8 p.m., authorities announced, on social media, that the operation was concluded.

“Police have now completed their investigation in regard to the weapons complaint. They have cleared the residence and a fourth party has been taken into custody,” said the police service.

“Police are no longer in the area.”

All four individuals now face various drug-related charges.

Three were released on appearance notices, while the fourth was held to attend a pending a court appearance over the weekend.
