Fentanyl, meth destined for Far North seized in police raid

Police say they intercepted a shipment of illicit drugs bound for a remote James Bay community last week, charging two people in the process.

The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, with support from the Ontario Provincial Police, located two suspects in Cochrane, Ont., in the morning hours of Dec. 4.

“The suspects were identified as a result of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking activity,” said the Nishnawbe Aski police in a news release.

Arrest at train station

“The two female suspects were arrested without incident at the Ontario Northland train station in Cochrane before they boarded a passenger train destined for Moosonee,” said police.

Following the arrests, a police search located and seized a quantity of suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine, along with paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking.

The police serive said the estimated street value of the seized drugs was $8,200.

As a result of the investigation, two 33-year-old women from Moose Factory First Nation have been charged with two counts of drug trafficking each

Both accused have since been released from custody with conditions and are awaiting future court appearances.
