‘Extremely dangerous’: Sault police warn against walking on St. Marys River ice

Sault police issue warning after reports of people cutting holes in St. Marys River ice to cold plunge.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is urging residents to stay off the ice on the St. Marys River following a recent increase in reports of people walking on the frozen waterway and engaging in cold plunges far from shore.

Police stressed that the river ice is unpredictable and poses a serious risk to anyone who ventures onto it.

“Sault Police have recently received multiple reports of people walking on the ice atop the St. Marys River and even creating holes for cold plunging far from shore,” said the police service in a news release.

Authorities highlighted that river ice is inherently unstable due to the constant movement of the water beneath it. Ice thickness can change rapidly, and an area that appears solid may not be strong enough to support a person’s weight. The act of cutting holes in the ice further compromises its integrity, increasing the risk of falling through.

Dangers extend beyond the initial plunge

“Whether someone accidentally falls through the ice or intentionally cold plunges, entering the St. Marys River poses a serious risk of injury or death,” police said.

The cold water can trigger shock and hypothermia almost immediately. Further, the St. Marys River is known for its powerful currents.

“Even when the surface appears calm, fast-moving water beneath the ice can pull a person under and away from the opening in seconds, making rescue extremely dangerous and difficult,” said police.

Community members are asked to stay off the ice and report any unsafe activity by calling [phone] – if someone has fallen through the ice, residents should call 911 immediately.
