Employee at Sault treatment centre charged with sexual assault

A 40-year-old man faces sexual assault and forcible confinement charges after two inmates were allegedly assaulted at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre.

Police in Sault Ste. Marie have charged a 40-year-old man who works at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre with sexual assault and forcible confinement.

The investigation began July 9 when police received complaints that the employee had sexually assaulted inmates at the facility.

“An investigation revealed the accused … had sexually assaulted two victims on multiple occasions and forcibly confined one of the victims while doing so,” police said in a news release Friday.

The suspect turned himself in Oct. 9, and he was charged with three counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement.

He is being held in custody ahead of a bail hearing.
