Edmonton trucker charged with stunt driving in Ontario

A 38-year-old commercial driver from Edmonton, Atla., has been charged with stunt driving after Ontario Provincial Police stopped a tractor-trailer for speeding in a northern Ontario community last week.

OPP said officers stopped the commercial motor vehicle around 2:15 p.m. on Jan. 28 in Val Rita, about 150 kilometres northwest of Timmins along Highway 11.

Police said the driver was travelling 101 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone.

In Ontario, stunt driving includes driving 40 km/h or more over the speed limit on roads with a posted limit under 80 km/h. The offence also covers dangerous behaviours such as racing and intentionally cutting off other vehicles.

The charge carries severe and immediate penalties. The driver received a 30-day licence suspension and the trailer involved was impounded for 14 days.

The accused motorist also now has a future traffic court date in Ontario.

Court-imposed penalties for stunt driving may include a fine of up to $10,000, a driver’s licence suspension of up to three years and/or up to six months in jail. Drivers face a minimum first-time fine for stunt driving of $2,000 upon conviction. Motorist convicted of stunt driving may also face six demerit points, higher insurance costs and a mandatory driver improvement course.

Safety reminder

OPP used the incident to reiterate a fundamental road safety message.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” said police in a social media post detailing the incident.

“Speeding puts lives at risk.”

“Slow down,” added OPP Constable Kyler Brouwer.
