Drugs, cash worth more than $130K seized in Thunder Bay bust

Four people, three from Ontario and one from Alberta, are in custody following a Thunder Bay police investigation that resulted in the seizure of an estimated $116,000 in drugs and more than $15,000 in cash.

The Thunder Bay Police Service executed a series of warrants on Sept. 18, the culmination of an investigation into drug trafficking in the city.

Parking lot arrests initiate raids

The operations on Thursday began when police located two suspects in a parking lot in the 700 block of Memorial Avenue.

“One of the suspects attempted to flee and destroy a cellphone in his possession,” police said in a news release.

Both suspects were arrested at the scene.

Police then executed warrants at an address on Cumberland Street North and at residences on Machar Avenue, Windsor Street and Crossbow Street. Two more suspects were taken into custody during these searches.

Drugs, cash and paraphernalia seized

“Through the investigation, police seized quantities of suspected cocaine, crack cocaine and fentanyl, along with cash and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking,” said Thunder Bay police.

As a result of the investigation, a 61-year-old man from Brooks, Alta., a 49-year-old man from Mississauga, a 57-year-old man from Thunder Bay and a 45-year-old woman also from Thunder Bay have each been charged with drug trafficking.

The three men are additionally charged with possession of property obtained by crime. The woman faces an additional charge of drug possession.

The man from Alberta is also charged with obstructing a peace officer and the local man is facing an additional charge for breaching an undertaking.

All four accused appeared in court on Friday and have been remanded into custody pending future court dates.
