Dog safe in hotel bed after hours-long Hwy. 69 closure

A major northern Ontario highway was closed for several hours on Tuesday after severe winter conditions stranded transport trucks and made travel hazardous.

Highway 69, a key corridor connecting the Georgian Bay area to northeastern Ontario, was shut down in both directions near Shawanaga First Nation just after 10:30 a.m. due to a disabled transport truck and poor visibility and road conditions.

Conditions worsen, closure expands

About an hour after the initial closure, Ontario Provincial Police expanded the affected zone as conditions deteriorated further.

“Road conditions are extremely poor and the OPP is advising motorists to avoid the area,” said police in a social media update at the time.

During the closure with traffic backed up and conditions worsening, officers implemented a controlled maneuver to help stranded vehicles turn around safely and return south.

Stranded motorists, pets find warmth and safety

Police highlighted the teamwork and patience from everyone involved, noting that stranded motorists and their travel companions made it safely off the highway.

“One such companion, Jagerine (a dog), was happy to be in her bed in a hotel,” said police in a social media post following the closure.

The highway reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m.

Police stress winter driving safety

“The OPP thanks the public for their patience and cooperation,” OPP said.

“Please remember to drive according to road and weather conditions.”

“See snow go slow,” added OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer.

Provincial police also reiterated general winter driving advice in their social media post.

“Winter weather can create unexpected challenges on our highways,” OPP said.

“Winter driving can be unpredictable. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle and follow official guidance during closures.”
