The UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service is warning the public after a business on Manitoulin Island received a counterfeit $50 bill.

The police service said it received a report from a M’Chigeeng business last week that a fake bill was discovered by a local bank after it had submitted a night deposit.

Holiday season a prime time for fraud

“People may try to pass counterfeit bills at any time, but it’s especially rampant this time of year when everyone is so busy and attention is focused more on Holiday shopping,” said police in a socail media post.

Authorities said they do not know how many counterfeit bills might be in circulation but aim to alert the community.

Steps to take if you receive a suspect bill

Police provided instructions from the Bank of Canada for anyone who believes they have received a counterfeit note:

• Put the note in a marked envelope.
• Write down the time, date, location and description of the person who gave you the note.
• If the bill is verified as counterfeit, a report will be filed with the appropriate authorities.

UCCM Anishnaabe police also directed the public to the Bank of Canada’s YouTube channel for more information on identifying counterfeit currency.
