A 63-year-old convenience store employee was taken to hospital Tuesday morning after being hit in the head with a bottle and assaulted during a robbery, Sudbury police said.

A 24-year-old man who was out on probation is facing several charges following the robbery at the Kwik-Way on Elm Street.

Police responded around 10:40 a.m. and discovered the assault victim, police said in a news release Wednesday morning.

“The individual responsible for the robbery fled on foot prior to police arrival,” police said.

Gave himself up

Several police units arrived on the scene and tracked the suspect to a residential building on Elm Street.

“Based on the investigation, officers had reason to believe that the individual involved in the incident was inside the residence,” the release said.

“Officers set up containment of the building and members of the (emergency response unit) began communicating with the individuals inside the residence.”

The man gave himself up around 12:35 p.m. and was taken into custody.

“Officers maintained containment of the residence as it was believed that relevant evidence was inside and the additional individuals inside the home refused to exit,” police said.

Police were then granted a search warrant for the residence.

“Around 3:45 p.m., officers entered the building and removed the remaining parties from inside the home,” police said.

“Detectives executed the search warrant and located clothing worn by the individual during the commission of the offence.”

The suspect in the case has been charged with robbery, aggravated assault, wearing a disguise, uttering threats, obstructing police and violating probation.

He was held in custody overnight and will be in bail court today, Wednesday.

“We would like to thank community members in the area for their cooperation and patience while officers were on scene,” police said.
