Conservation Sudbury hopes water levels will decrease over the coming days

Many residents in Greater Sudbury are dealing with high water levels not seen since 2023, one of the worst years for flooding in the city.

Many residents in Greater Sudbury are dealing with high water levels not seen in a few years.

In the last decade, Conservation Sudbury says 2023 was the worst year for flooding in the city.

“We had a fairly significant event on the Vermilion River system that really made life inconvenient for a few people who were stranded from their homes because they had to get through roads that were covered with water,” said Carl Jorgensen, general manager of Conservation Sudbury.

“This year we’re experiencing something similar, but not quite to the same level yet.”

Jorgensen said they are expecting water levels to hold at current levels for at least a few more days.

“We’re anticipating or hoping for a decline, but that really has a lot to do with what weather we get,” he said.

“We got a little bit of rain falling right now, potentially a little bit more later this week. Things are starting to plateau up in the upper parts of the watershed, but we’re still seeing a slow rise here at Centennial Park.”

While Conservation Sudbury tracks water levels every day of the year, officials will be paying closer attention in the coming days and remain in contact with Greater Sudbury.
