Cochrane mayor expresses condolences to family after fatal weekend fire

Three weekend house fires in Cochrane destroyed homes and killed two people on Namah Road. Bitter cold froze water trucks, hampering firefighter efforts.

Cochrane Mayor Peter Politis has offered condolences to a family who lost two people in a fatal weekend fire on Namah Road in the Ontario community.

Politis said a 10-year-old girl was killed, as well as her 60-year-old grandfather, who went back into the home to try to save her.

“As mayor, and as a fellow member of this community we all cherish, I want to extend my deepest condolences to the families affected,” he said in a social media post.

“No words can soften the weight of this grief, but I hope they feel the strength, compassion, and unity of the entire Town of Cochrane standing with them. Our hearts, love, and unwavering support are with you.”

The fire department in Cochrane said it responded at 9:21 p.m. Jan. 24 to a residential fire in which the home was fully engulfed in flames.

“The fire department responded with three fire apparatus and 17 firefighters. Due to the rural location, a tanker shuttle operation was established to supply water for fire suppression,” fire chief Richard Vallée said in an email to CTV News.

The Ontario Provincial Police and EMS were also on the scene.

“Four people were treated at the scene and were brought to Lady Minto Hospital for further treatment,” Vallée said.

“Firefighters operated in extremely challenging conditions, battling the blaze in -30 C temperatures for approximately four hours. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and (is) presently on scene conducting the fire investigation.”

Multiple fires over the weekend

In his post, Politis said the Jan. 24 fire was just one of three that took place over the weekend.

“Each of these incidents resulted in the complete loss of the structures involved,” he said.

“I also want to recognize the extraordinary dedication of our firefighters, all of whom serve as volunteers. Their willingness to step into danger, time and again, for the sake of their neighbours is an act of profound selflessness.”

“This weekend demanded everything of them, and they responded with courage, professionalism, and heart. We owe them our deepest gratitude,” he added.

“In light of these tragic events, I encourage everyone to take a moment to review a few important winter fire‑safety precautions.”

Those precautions include ensuring exhaust pipes, especially on vehicles and home heating systems, are kept clear of snow and ice.

Ensure that smoke alarms have working batteries and be extra cautious with combustibles around heat sources.

“Small, simple steps can make a meaningful difference in preventing tragedy,” Politis said.

“Cochrane is a resilient community. We grieve together, we support one another, and we move forward with compassion and care. May we honour those we have lost by looking out for each other and keeping our homes and families safe.”
