Cocaine seized, teen charged on northwestern Ont. First Nation

Nishnawbe Aski police seized a quantity of cocaine and arrested a 17-year-old girl following the search of two homes in Eabametoong First Nation last weekend.

Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, with assistance from its canine unit, executed a search warrant on May 31 at a residence in the 500 block of Eabamet Crescent.

“Upon entering the home, officers located and arrested a female suspect without incident,” said the First Nation police service in a news release.

Police said a subsequent search of the residence led to the seizure of a quantity of suspected cocaine.

Second search warrant executed

Nishnawbe Aski police executed a second search that same day at a home in the 400 block of Fort Albany Crescent.

Authorities said that following the second search, officers located and seized paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking.

“Both search warrants were obtained as a result of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking activity within the community,” said police.

Police estimated the street value of the drugs seized as more than $10,000.

Charges laid

As a result, the local teen was charged with drug trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.

“The name of the accused is being withheld in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act,” said police.

The accused has since been released with conditions and a future court date.
