Assault charged laid after correctional officer falls down stairs at Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre

A 25-year-old man faces an assault charge following an incident at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre that sent a correctional officer tumbling down a set of stairs.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said 911 operators received reports of the incident at about 10:15 a.m. on Feb. 16.

“An investigation revealed the accused had pushed the victim, causing them to fall down several stairs,” police said in a release.

The victim did not report any physical injuries as a result of the fall.

Officers attended the facility the following day and arrested the accused in connection with the incident. The man was officially charged with one count of assault.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
