Overcrowding of cats at Timmins shelter Over 120 cats and kittens in Timmins are looking for homes, so the Timmns & District Humane Society has lowered the adoption fee this month.

The cat population in Timmins is on the rise.

Timmins & District Humane Society says it currently has over 120 cats and kittens in need of a home.

Workers at the shelter say that overcrowding puts pressure on already scarce resources and staff. It can also accelerate the spread of infection at the shelter.

The humane society says more can be done by pet owners to prevent overpopulation in the first place.

“Something that obviously really, really helps is having people in the community spaying and neutering their pets. It's not just one of those things that sounds cliché. It's not just something that Bob Barker said at the end of The Price is Right. It's a real issue and it's an ongoing issue.” said Alicia Santamaria, of Timmins & District Human Society.

For the month of September, the shelter has lowered its adoption fee by $50.

All adoptions include: spaying or neutering, along with de-worming and all vaccines necessary.
