Ankle monitor alert leads to switchblade, drug seizure: OPP

A 55-year-old man from Elliot Lake is facing multiple charges after a tracking agency reported a curfew breach, leading to his arrest, where police say they found a prohibited weapon and drugs.

Ontario Provincial Police said the man was taken into custody on March 22, following an incident that began the previous day.

OPP said police received the call from a tracking agency at about 12:20 a.m. on March 21.

“Police received a call from a tracking agency stating a person (who wears an ankle monitor) was showing a different address location than where it was supposed to be,” provincial police said in a news release.

Police located the individual approximately 43 hours later, at about 7:05 p.m. on Sunday, as he was walking on Tokyo Crescent in Elliot Lake. He was taken into custody without further incident.

“In his possession was a prohibited ‘switchblade’ knife and numerous suspected hydromorphone pills,” OPP said.

As a result of the incidents, the 55-year-old Elliot Lake man was charged with possession of a prohibited device for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a weapon and drug possession.

He also faces three counts of failing to comply with a release order, one count of failing to comply with a probation order and one count of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order.

The accused was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Blind River.
