4 charged after cash, drugs, gun seized on northern Ont. First Nation

Nearly $20,000 in cash and drugs were seized after the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service and OPP raided a home on Brunswick House First Nation this week.

Police charged four people and seized cocaine, fentanyl, crystal meth and a shotgun following the search of a home in Brunswick House First Nation this week.

Members of various Nishnawbe Aski Police Service teams, including its canine unit, executed a search warrant at a home in the community on May 13, with support from Ontario Provincial Police.

Police said the search warrant was obtained as a result of an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking activity occurring within First Nation community.

The First Nation police service said when officers entered the home, they located and took four suspects into custody without incident.

Cash, drugs, weapon seized

“Following a search of the home, police located and seized a quantity of fentanyl, cocaine, crystal methamphetamine, suboxone tablets, morphine capsules, a shotgun, cash and paraphernalia consistent with drug trafficking,” police said in a news release.

“The estimated street value of drugs seized totals nearly $9,200.”

Nishnawbe Aski Police added that the total cash was almost $8,900.

All four charged

As a result of the investigation, four people – a 58-year-old local woman, a 45-year-old woman from Hamilton, a 25-year-old man from Pickering and a 47-year-old man from Chapleau – are each charged with four drug trafficking offences and possession of property obtained by crime.

The Pickering man is also charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm and careless storage of a firearm, along with two other firearm-related offences.

The Chapleau man faces an additional charge of resisting a peace officer.

All four accused appeared for a bail hearing on May 14. The 47-year-old man was released with conditions, while the other three individuals were remanded into custody with future appearances scheduled.
