Where to get help if contemplating suicide

There is help available for those who are contemplating suicide, or who are worried about a friend or loved one taking their own life.

Quebec has the highest suicide rate of any province in Canada, with three people taking their own life every day, and eight more hospitalized after an attempt.

People who are suffering from an accumulation of factors that are leading toward despair and suicidal tendencies may use language that reveals their pain and distress, such as saying they'd be better off dead, or saying they are useless.

They may also show non-verbal signs such as isolating themselves, showing an interest in weapons, or be aggressive, irritable, or discouraged.

However there are dozens of agencies and groups that want to help and can provide solutions to the suffering and psychological problems.

In an emergency people should call 9-1-1, but if the crisis is not imminent other help is available.

Suicide Action Montreal offers help 24 hours a day, seven days a week for those at risk. They can be reached at 514 723-4000 by Montreal residents, while those outside the city should call 1-866-APPELLE(277-3553).

Suicide Action Montreal also offers information meetings for friends and family where crisis workers offers methods to help a suicidal people.

The agency also has a comprehensive list of suicide help agencies across Quebec.

Kids Help Phone (Jeunesse, J'ecoute) is available for all youth, 24 hours a day 7 days a week to help with all problems that children can encounter, including suicidal thoughts.

Health Quebec has good advice on how to recognize suicidal thoughts in others, and recognition that suicidal thoughts are a symptom of other problems.

The agency also offers concrete suggestions on how to change habits and improve your mental health.
