Two teens arrested after series of armed robberies in Montreal

Montreal police have arrested two 15-year-olds in connection with a string of armed robberies allegedly carried out through online sales ads in recent months.

According to the Montreal police (SPVM), the suspects are accused of arranging to meet victims in the Anjou, Saint-Léonard and Mercier–Hochelaga–Maisonneuve boroughs before attacking them with pepper spray and stealing their belongings.

The arrests were made on Nov. 5 following an investigation. Police say they seized evidence during searches of the suspects’ homes in Montreal.

Both teens appeared before Quebec Youth Court on Nov. 6 to face charges including armed robbery, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of stolen property and obstruction.

Due to their ages, they can not be publicly identified.

They have since been released under strict conditions, including a curfew.

Police are reminding residents to be cautious when meeting people for transactions arranged online.

The SPVM recommends using designated “safe exchange zones,” which are monitored by cameras and accessible 24/7, and bringing a trusted person along whenever possible.

Police remind those purchasing or exchanging items online to investigate the seller before continuing the transaction.

In addition, police recommend the following:

• Verify the image of the item using search engines.
• Meet with the seller in person to identify them and confirm the availability of the item.
• Choose a public, safe location and bring someone with you.

There are safe trading zones listed on most local police sites. The Montreal police department has 18 such zones listed.
