The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) confirmed on Sunday that three tornadoes occurred with storms on Aug. 29 near the Quebec-Ontario border. One tornado formed over land in a forested area near Lac Kennedy, Que., east of Rapides-des-Joachims, at 5:05 p.m. It was rated EF1, meaning it caused moderate damage to trees. NTP said the tornado had an estimated maximum wind speed of 145 km/h, a track length of 11.2 kilometres and a maximum path width of 560 metres. “The tornado moved from the west, and its start time was estimated using radar data,” the organization said. The two other tornadoes occurred in Ontario in the Mattawa area, one near Kiosk at 1:10 p.m. and the other near Esker Lake at 2:10 p.m. NTP said witnesses captured video of a vortex-funnel cloud aloft near Kiosk, although trees obscured the view of the surface below. “A review of satellite imagery revealed a tornado damage path through forested areas northeast of Kiosk.” NTP rated it EF2, with an estimated maximum wind speed of 190 km/h, a track length of 5.39 kilometres and a maximum path width of 360 metres. The Esker Lake tornado was also rated EF2. “It began in a forested area and had an estimated maximum wind speed of 190 km/h, a track length of 11.8 kilometres and a maximum path width of 330 metres. The tornado moved from the west.”
