An indefinite strike began at 9 a.m. on Monday at Metro’s fruit and vegetable distribution centre in Laval, as well as at its head office. The centre supplies some 1,000 Metro Group stores across Quebec. The strike, involving 550 workers, also includes drivers from the Mérite 1 warehouse in Rivière-des-Prairies. The trade union, the Fédération du commerce, affiliated with the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN), already holds a mandate for an indefinite general strike after 97 per cent of members voted in favour of a walkout. The current strike is open-ended, depending on how the situation develops, the union announced on Monday. Several issues are at stake, including wages, the use of subcontractors for drivers, remote work for head office staff and health and safety. Metro management has yet to comment.
