When choosing a name for Winnipeg’s pro soccer league, the team turned their eyes to the sky. On Wednesday, Winnipeg’s new Northern Super League franchise unveiled its name: Ember FC. Dayna Spiring, the team’s president, said the name was inspired by Manitoba’s glowing horizon. Ember’s logo features both a spark representing an ember and an animal the team calls a sundog. “Desiree Scott grew up under this sky and took it all the way to Olympic gold. But when it was time to play professionally, she had to leave home to do it.” Now, Spiring says, nearly 100 people are signed up for Ember FC’s tryouts this weekend. “This is the first time in Manitoba that we will have a professional women’s team.” The team will be hitting the field in Winnipeg’s south end at Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in 2027.
