Rematch is on for byelection in Terrebonne

The federal Liberal candidate for Terrebonne, Tatiana Auguste, was surrounded by several supporters Saturday morning for the opening of her campaign office.

She hopes to be re-elected — and for good this time — in the April 13 byelection.

Auguste had been elected after winning by a single vote over Bloc Québécois candidate Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné, who then turned to the courts to have the result invalidated due to the rejection of a Bloc Québécois mail-in ballot following an error by Elections Canada.

The Supreme Court of Canada subsequently annulled the result of the last federal election in the riding north of Montreal, triggering a new election.

The Liberal candidate sought to reassure Terrebonne residents concerned about the route of the proposed Quebec City–Toronto high-speed rail (HSR) project. She stated at a press conference that public consultation on the project would be absolutely necessary to ensure that residents’ concerns are heard.

Among the priorities put forward by Auguste are the construction of the Urbanova interchange, the construction of affordable housing, and the prevention of youth crime.

In addition to the byelection in Terrebonne, two others will take place in the Toronto area, following the resignations of former ministers Chrystia Freeland and Bill Blair. Both ridings are considered Liberal strongholds.

Auguste is running against Conservative candidate Adrienne Charles, the New Democrat Party’s Maxime Beaudoin, and Benjamin Rankin of the Green Party of Canada.
