RECALL: Dubai chocolate sold by Sour Bites linked to Canada-wide salmonella outbreak

Quebec’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) is warning people not to consume Dubai chocolate sold by Sour Bites in Montreal.

“This warning follows food recalls issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) due to a national outbreak of salmonella infections linked to contaminated pistachios distributed to various establishments across Canada," the agency notes.

The products affected include single-unit Dubai chocolate sold between April 7 and Sept. 5, 2025.

“The product was sold refrigerated. It was packaged in a cardboard box bearing the company’s logo and did not have a label,” MAPAQ adds.

The recall is being issued as a precautionary measure.

“Anyone who has this product in their possession is advised not to consume it. It is recommended that it be discarded,” the agency states. “Even if the product in question shows no signs of spoilage or suspicious odour, consuming it may pose a health risk.”

The recall warns that consuming food contaminated with salmonella bacteria can cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness, which can lead to serious infection, particularly in young children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

“In healthy people, it can cause short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, sometimes accompanied by blood in the stool,” MAPAQ said. “Symptoms usually appear six to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. They last an average of three to seven days.”

Salmonellosis can also lead to long-term complications, including a severe form of arthritis.
