Quebec rolls out measures in hopes of saving 15 per cent on infrastructure

The Quebec government is asking ministries and agencies to review their infrastructure project practices in hopes of achieving savings of 15 per cent.

Infrastructure Minister Benoit Charette made this request on Monday during the Grand Forum du Conseil des infrastructures.

The government points out that soaring construction costs in recent years have put additional pressure on infrastructure projects.

According to Charette, Quebec has also “noticed that there were sometimes exaggerations in the design of certain infrastructure projects or significant differences from one region to another.”

“This has to change,” the minister said in a news release.

Quebec is asking ministries and agencies to streamline requirements, set benchmarks for each type of project and define standardized components to facilitate efficiency in construction.

The government also wants to group similar projects by program in order to pool resources, reuse plans and make consolidated purchases, among other things.

“By encouraging creativity among government teams, we can deliver high-quality projects that meet the needs of Quebecers, while ensuring that money is invested in the right places,” Charette said.

The infrastructure budget for Quebec this year is $19 billion.
