Part of Châteauguay on high alert for flood risk

Residents in the Seers Park area of Châteauguay on Montreal’s South Shore are being warned to stay on high alert on Monday due to an elevated risk of flooding.

“Act quickly to secure homes and belongings,” the city stated on its website.

Officials are blaming a “major ice jam” in the d’Youville Boulevard area for the flood risk.

“Public works employees are installing a temporary dike along d’Youville Bouylevard to help limit flooding risks,” the city noted. “Additional firefighter teams have been deployed to ensure the safety of residents.”

Residents are being encouraged to check the city’s website for regular updates.

“Municipal teams are actively working to mitigate flood risks and continue to monitor developments, particularly due to the warmer temperatures forecasted in the coming days, which could affect ice melt and water flow,” officials added.

Stay prepared

To reduce the effects of melting snow and ensure the safety of your home and property, city officials recommend that people:

• Check that gutters and drainage systems are clear and able to direct water away from the home.
• Clear snow from curbs, roofs and entrances to prevent infiltration and ensure drainage to storm sewers.
• Check that the sump pump is working properly.
• Protect belongings and furniture by moving them to the upper floors if possible.
• Prepare an emergency kit with water, non-perishable food, medication and flashlights.
