Montreal recently renamed Vimy Park in Outremont after late Premier Jacques Parizeau because he had lived nearby.

The city received a lot of criticism for the move but Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre agreed with the decision and cited Parizeau as a pillar of Quebec’s history.

The park had been known as Vimy Park since 1933.

Today Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre announced a new park in NDG will be renamed to remember the battle.

“It will be also a great opportunity for all the people and the kids to know what happened at that time,” Coderre said.

Coderre also said a public place would be renamed for Vimy before 2017, which is the 100-year anniversary of the battle at Vimy, France.

Historians cite the battle as a critical effort during WWI, one that showed Canada’s military as a formidable force on the world stage for the first time.

Nearly 10,000 Canadians were killed or injured during the battle at Vimy Ridge.
