The city is in spring cleaning mode, and there is a lot of garbage on the streets in Montreal. On Friday, Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada asked Montrealers to help take better care of the neighbourhoods. “We’re putting more money, more people, and working on having better equipment in order to have a city that is cleaner, faster,” she said. “If you want to be proud of our city, we have to take care of our own city, and everybody should pitch in. Everybody should be responsible.” This year, the city started its annual cleaning blitz two weeks early as the snow melts, revealing a winter’s worth of trash littering the streets and sidewalks. Ferrada Martinez said that while on a recent trip to South Korea, she noticed shop owners encouraging people to bring them their trash. She’d like to see a similar culture start to catch on in Montreal. “The idea is not doing something that will put anybody in danger, but, I mean, just picking up in front of your home should be something that you can do,” she said.
