Here’s where to go in NDG and Côte Saint-Luc to stay warm during the power outage

Cote-Saint-Luc Mayor David Tordjman says the city is doing everything it can to make sure residents are in a warm space as the power remains out.

Libraries, malls, community centres and other locations are being opened as many residents in a hard-hit region of Montreal are without power.

Large areas in Côte Saint-Luc and the Notre-Dame-de-Grace neighbourhood remain without power Sunday morning after the area was hit with a deep freeze on Friday night.

More than half (39) of Montreal’s 62 Hydro-Quebec service interruptions were in the area.

Hydro-Quebec spokesperson Lynn Saint-Laurent said on Saturday that power consumption surpassed 40,000 MW, which is just shy of the record numbers in 2023 when they reached 43,124 MW.

“So not quite there, but still high consumption,” she said. “This is what we get ready for at Hydro-Quebec. We prepare throughout the year, spring, summer and fall, doing all of the maintenance work on our generators facilities, transmission network, distribution network, to make sure that all of that equipment and the accessory equipments are ready for the winter so that we have optimal capacity to meet these high periods of demand.”

One station that remains an issue is the Hampstead substation.

“We do know that the cause of the problem is equipment within the Hampstead substation,” said Saint-Laurent. “We have teams on site who are investigating the matter.”

Recently elected Côte Saint-Luc Mayor David Tordjman said it’s all hands on deck to find warm places.

“As soon as I found out that there was a situation on the Sabbath on top of it, so a lot of people were not capable of communicating, we mobilized our full team,” he said. “We started a communication campaign. We started welfare checks. We had call-outs from our library to vulnerable residents, and used every resource possible, from volunteers to staff, to reach out to residents across the city, and we mobilized with the Red Cross and shelters.”

Tordjman said taxis and other transports are being used to get people to warm spaces.

Those without power are advised to do the following to avoid pipes freezing and bursting:

• Let cold water run continuously from at least one faucet (a slow, steady stream).
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.
• Ensure that interior doors remain open to help heat reach colder areas.
• If you experience a complete loss of heat, continue to let water run until power and heating are fully restored.
