Fire in Pierrefonds-Roxboro injures one, forces 92 out

A blaze that started in a third-floor kitchen early Monday left a 40-unit building badly damaged, injured one man, and forced many from their homes.

A fire at an apartment building in Montreal’s Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough left one person injured and forced 92 people out of their homes on Tuesday morning.

Firefighters say it started on the third floor of a 40-unit apartment building at the corner of Gouin and des Sources Boulevards, when a tenant was cooking.

More than 100 firefighters were on scene before 7 a.m.

The fire spread through the stove fan’s exhaust and onto the roof.

The person cooking suffered injuries to their hands.

“We don’t know if, oil, cooking or something. But it started in the kitchen, to the ventilation duct, and to the roof,” said Kevin Francoeur of the Montreal fire department.

The building was evacuated, and many tenants were taken in by friends, family.

The Red Cross said it is helping 22 families affected by the fire.

Officials say the second and third floors are badly damaged, and for now it’s too soon to say if the building can be salvaged.
