Evelyn Bennett scores again as the Montreal Roses beat AFC Toronto 1-0

Evelyn Bennett scored in the 88th minute on Sunday, and the Montreal Roses maintained their perfect record after three matches this season with a 1-0 win over AFC Toronto.

Anna Karpenko saved all seven shots on target from the Toronto side, meaning the Roses have yet to concede a goal since the start of the campaign.

Danielle Krzyzaniak, meanwhile, faced three shots on target in this, Toronto AFC’s first defeat in three matches this year.

The Roses return to action on Saturday with a visit to the Calgary Wild.

Right at the end

After a goalless first half, the home side thought they had scored when Charlotte Bilbault deflected a pass into her own net in the 55th minute. However, the referee ruled that there was an offside in the build-up.

Bennett had the Roses’ first shot on target in the 60th minute when she took possession of the ball in front of Krzyzaniak. The goalkeeper, however, had the last word.

In the 77th minute, Noémi Paquin made an interception and sent Bennett through on goal. Krzyzaniak, however, came out aggressively to cover the angles, making the save.

Kaylee Hunter, who finished second in the scoring charts at the end of the Northern Super League’s (NSL) inaugural season, fired a shot just over the crossbar in the 84th minute.

Bennett, who had scored three of the club’s six goals prior to this match, finally broke the deadlock in the 88th minute. Evelyn Badu played the ball to her on the left of the Toronto goal, then beat a defender before firing a low shot to the keeper’s right.
