Dozens of cyclists gathered in Montreal on Monday for a symbolic “die-in” to draw attention to a particularly dangerous road for cyclists and pedestrians. Vélorution Montreal organized the event, the day after a 31-year-old woman was killed on her bike on Parc Avenue. The organization says that between 2013 and 2024, eight other people were killed while walking or cycling on the street, adding that the road layout is designed for car speed and reveals “a systemic problem of road violence that cannot be ignored.” “Every life lost here is the result of political choices,” said Vélorution founding member Séverine Le Page. “Parc Avenue could be transformed, but the authorities continue to maintain a deadly urban highway at the heart of Montreal. As long as the safety of pedestrians and cyclists comes after the convenience of drivers, we will remain mobilized.” The group and other pro-bicycle organizations are calling for the street to be improved for safety. “We all share a responsibility to protect those who choose to walk or cycle,” said Vélo Québec spokesperson Magali Bebronne. “The death and collision statistics on Parc Avenue are shocking. We need to act because the status quo is unacceptable.”
