Southern access to London’s downtown remains restricted, despite an earlier projected opening date of Sept. 1. Wellington Street remains closed between Horton and King Street in both directions, including the underpass. The closure began on July 2, to allow for work on the York Street Infrastructure Renewal Project. A section between Clarence Street and Wellington Street is expected to remain closed until the end of October. Londoners have access through the east side of the York and Wellington intersection, which allows for westbound travel from the east side of York Street. The intersection at Horton Street and Wellington Street will remain open, but no northbound traffic is permitted through the intersection. The closure was originally met with frustration from some London motorists, who said the closure complicated their route downtown. According to the City of London, the project is replacing old combined sewers, which will help improve the health of the Thames River and increase sewer capacity for London’s growing population.
