An investigation is underway into a fire in northeast Calgary Thursday that left one person dead. Fire crews responded to the 200 block of 27 Avenue N.E. just before 12:20 p.m. for reports of a structure fire. They noted light smoke coming from the back of the home and the basement, said Calgary Fire Department public information officer Alex Kwan. Crews stretched a hose line and were able to enter through the back and made their way downstairs, where they knocked down the fire. Kwan said that during a search of the basement, they located the victim and tried to start a rescue but ultimately confirmed the victim was dead. No other injuries were reported. Crews were able to contain the fire, limiting the damage to the house of origin, Kwan said. A number of streets in the area have been closed down.
