‘We had just fixed that porch’: Homeowner frustrated after car plows through home on Adelaide Street

A car has crashed into a home in London on Sunday morning. CTV London's Brent Lale has more.

Bill Van Beers and his brother were home when he felt an impact which rocked his Adelaide Street house.

“I heard a bang and then came out,” said Van Beers, who was upstairs when an SUV slammed into his front porch.

“I couldn’t get out the front door and went out the back and saw somebody had hit the house.”

There was a path of carnage down Adelaide starting with a stop light and hydro pole being taken out, bricks were everywhere, and the SUV coming to rest up against Van Beers’ porch.

911 was called and police and EMS arrived to find the driver of the vehicle already out of the car, walking around. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police won’t disclose if they have any reason for the SUV leaving the roadway.

“We believe it was traveling northbound, but we don’t know what led to the collision at this point,” said Acting Insp. Maria Wright of the London Police Service.

“It is still under investigation.”

Police have closed a section of the road, between South Street and Hamilton Road, while London Hydro works to repair the snapped hydro pole. Hydro officials on scene told CTV News they expected to need nearly 10-12 hours to finish work.

“He had to be doing 140 km/h because, he took out the hydro pole and went an extra 125 feet, hit the house,” said Van Beers, looking at his home from across the street.

“He was definitely moving, but he was up and walking around when we came out. They took him to the hospital.”

A few residents were asked by London Hydro to shelter-in-place while crews initially dealt with lives wires. Others couldn’t leave as hydro crews worked outside their homes.

Van Beers spent the morning calling property restoration companies and insurance. He’s just happy no one was seriously injured.

“I’m just kind of frustrated because we’ve been fixing it up,” said Van Beers.

“We had just fixed the porch up last summer, and now it’s got to be replaced. So just more frustrating than anything.”
