'Significant winter storm' takes aim at southern Ontario

Freezing rain warning ends, leaves icy sidewalks.

Things could get a little messy in the weather department for the first weekend in 2015, as a system moving across southern Ontario is expected to bring ice and snow.

In a special weather statement issued Friday morning, Environment Canada is warning about a significant winter storm for the London area and midwestern Ontario. The low pressure system is developing across the southern region of the province.

The storm should arrive on Saturday or Sunday, starting with snow and later changing to rain. The weather authority is also warning about the potential of freezing rain.

Commuters heading to central or eastern Ontario should be aware of snowfall that could amount to five to 10 centimetres.

Environment Canada says temperatures will hit the double digits on Sunday. However the warmth won’t be sticking around. According to the weather authority, a cold front will bring a return to freezing temperatures on Sunday.
