Police officers injured by dogs during arrest

Two police officers were injured after being attacked by three dogs during an investigation Tuesday in Hanover.

The incident happened on May 6 around 8 a.m., when two Hanover police officers were responding to a dispute between a tenant and an apartment building manager.

Police say they determined the 35-year-old male tenant was wanted by several police agencies and arrested him in the apartment building lobby.

He asked to return to his apartment to secure his dogs. At the suspect’s door, police say that the suspect resisted arrest, and a struggle ensued. Upon entering the apartment, the officers were “viciously attacked” by “as many as three Cane Corso dogs,” said police.

The two officers ultimately escaped the apartment, and were treated for bites to their hands, arms, and legs at the Hanover hospital.

Police say the suspect and his girlfriend fled the scene with their dogs. Police say the suspect’s girlfriend was later arrested in Hanover in possession of the dogs.

The male suspect was not located and remains at large. The dogs were taken by animal control and placed into quarantine.

Both officers were treated and released from hospital, but one of the officers, “sustained significant lacerations that may result in an extended recovery time,” according to a Hanover police news release.
