After billionaire businessman Frank Stronach was convicted of sexual assault, a major building in Aurora is being renamed. The Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex will no longer have the 93-year-old business mogul’s name attached to it, according to Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas. Mrakas issued a statement Wednesday morning. “As Mayor, I strongly condemn sexual violence and recognize the profound and lasting impact it is has on survivors, their families and entire communities,” says Mrakas. “I also recognize the tremendous courage it takes for survivors to come forward and share their experiences.” Mrakas says after speaking with Magna—the international auto parts company based in Aurora founded by Stronach—about the facility’s naming rights, the Town will remove the name and immediately start looking for a new naming rights partner for the building. Officials at Magna say it has requested the removal of its sponsorship recognition from the Aurora Recreation Complex. Stronach was found guilty on Friday of two charges – sexual assault and the historical offence of indecent assault. A park in Newmarket named after the convicted criminal will also be renamed.
