Discharged fireworks to blame for reports of gunshots, subsequent ‘hold and secure’ orders at area schools

A weapons investigation shut down Baseline Road West and placed nearby schools into hold and secure order Wednesday morning.

Fireworks are to blame for the sound of reported gunshots that prompted a police response in south London Wednesday morning.

Officers were called to the 100-block of Baseline Road shortly after 8:10 a.m. Following the report, police took precautionary measures, including temporarily closing nearby roads and placing area schools under a hold and secure order.

Police said a person inside a home in the area was taken into custody and a search warrant was executed at the residence.

No firearm was located, and police said the source of the initial reports is believed to have been a result of fireworks having been discharged.

No injuries were reported, and investigators say there is no ongoing risk to the public.

Road closures have since been lifted and schools have returned to normal operations.

London police said no charges will be laid.
