Officers struck on highway while assisting with a crash

Hundreds of crashes reported after winter weather in the area on Wednesday.

Two police officers have been sent to hospital after a crash on Highway 403 Wednesday morning.

According to OPP, the officers’ cruisers were struck from behind while they were investigating a separate crash in the westbound lanes near the exit for Highway 53.

According to police, both officers were inside their cars at the time.

One responding officer was assisting the motorist from the original collision and when another officer came to assist, was also struck by a separate vehicle.

Both drivers were charged with careless driving.

“We’d just like to put out another reminder, the roadways are snow and ice covered, you need to slow down,” said OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk

“And when you see these flashing lights, by law, you need to slow down and move over, and if you can’t move over safely, you have to reduce your speed. This is just common sense,” Sanchuk added.

The London region is currently experiencing snowy weather conditions with watches and warnings in effect.

Police are asking people to drive to the conditions and are saying, “If you see snow, go slow — if you see ice, think twice."
