LHSC has intercepted more than 200 weapons thanks to AI technology

Officials with London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) say newly installed safety technology is making an early impact.

The weapons detection system powered by artificial intelligence, is now operating at the Victoria and University campuses.

“At the University Hospital where the technology went live April 15, we’ve identified many items, including 166 knives, which works out to approximately five knives per day,” said Supervisor David Musyj.

He said Victoria Hospital went live May 6, and since then the system has captured 92 knives, which works out to approximately six knives per day.

“In all cases, these knives were of legal size and individuals either turn these items in to our security team or return them to their vehicles,” Musyj added.

In addition, though, Musyj pointed out that staff have also identified some prohibited items like batons and pepper or bear spray.

He said those items were provided to the police authorities and not given back to the people who attended the hospital with them.
