‘It’s unbelievable’: Snowsqualls turn roads into whiteouts across Huron, Middlesex counties

Locals tried to look on the positive side of things Thursday following another winter wallop in Huron County. Scott Miller reports.

For several hours Thursday morning and early afternoon, parts of Huron and Middlesex counties were pummeled with snow.

Clinton appeared to take the brunt of the Lake Huron streamer.

“It is unbelievable. I honestly came out here this morning at 6 a.m. and used the snow blower to blow the lane, and here I am about five hours later, back at it again. Absolutely unbelievable that this is happening,” said Clinton homeowner Sydney Wettlaufer.

A couple of streets over, Matthew Austin was shoveling out his driveway. Also, for the second time before noon.

“Are you getting a little tired of shoveling? Not yet. I’m sure if you come back in probably two hours, I might be, but right now, so far, so good,” said the Clinton homeowner.

Streamers off Lake Huron dumped up to 40 centimetres of snow on parts of the region Wednesday night and throughout Thursday. In midwestern Ontario, that’s on top of more than 100 centimetres that’s fallen in the past two weeks alone.

If this keeps up, it’s going to be a long winter of moving snow.

“This is quite a winter, so far. And the accumulation so quickly is just, crazy,” said Wettlaufer.

Police are asking motorists to drive to the conditions and lower their speed because it can go from a sunny, beautiful snowscape one second to a white out blizzard with no lines to see on the road in another.

Winter is unpredictable, but being prepared with snow tires, scrapers, and an emergency kit can make all the difference when the road seemingly disappears in front of you.

“It came a little early and is a little unexpected, but, you know, I’m assuming now it’s going to be a white Christmas,” said Austin.

It’s a positive outlook on a day where many were shaking their fist at Mother Nature.
