Influenza cases spike after holidays, Southwestern Public Health urges vaccination

Southwestern Public Health says influenza cases saw a major spike following the holidays. CTV’s Reta Ismail reports.

After the holidays, health officials are reporting a sharp rise in influenza cases across the region, including new outbreaks in long-term care homes.

Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) says it’s not too late for residents to protect themselves as increased social activity continues to drive transmission.

“It’s also the time of year, with socialization happening over the holidays,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ninh Tran. “Now that school is back and people are returning to work, that amount of socialization could lead to continued flu transmission.”

Health officials say influenza A, specifically the H3N2 strain, is currently dominant. Dr. Tran said, historically, cases remain elevated into February and March.

“Our most recent data shows percent positivity is 33.9 per cent, about 34 per cent,” officials said. “That’s higher than at any time during the last two flu seasons.”

Public health officials say vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization.

Dr. Tran said those at higher risk of complications should take extra precautions.

“Those who are at high risk of getting complications or being hospitalized, those who are really young, seniors with other medical conditions, or those who are pregnant, it would be particularly good to get the flu shot and take other precautions,” Tran said.

In addition to vaccination, residents are being reminded to wash their hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes, stay home when sick, clean high-touch surfaces, and consider wearing a mask in crowded or enclosed spaces.

Health officials warn that influenza can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, hospitalization, and death.

SWPH says flu vaccines remain available for children five years old and under, along with their guardians. Appointments can be booked online.
