‘We got creamed’: Rear ended police cruiser crashes into OPP officer during winter storm

OPP have released footage of the moment an officer was struck by his cruiser after it as rear-ended by another driver during a winter storm.

Provincial police in Bruce County, Ont., have shared dashcam video as a cautionary tale to drivers after a police cruiser was struck from behind in zero visibility, causing the vehicle to crash into an officer.

According to a social media post from OPP West Region, South Bruce OPP recently responded to a minor two-vehicle collision amid near whiteout conditions due to snow and high winds.

In the video from the police cruiser’s dashcam, an officer can be seen speaking to one of the involved drivers on the side of the road. Police say no injuries were sustained in the crash and only minor damage was done to the vehicles.

As one of the drivers drives off, a third vehicle off camera crashes into the rear of the police cruiser, causing it to jerk forward and strike the OPP officer.

An in-car camera inside the cruiser was also filming and depicted the crash, in which an officer and two people involved in the original crash are jolted forward by the force of the collision.

Police say no injuries were sustained.

The dashcam then shows the OPP officer who was inside the cruiser walking through heavy snow to the front of the vehicle to check if his partner is okay. Both officers then return to the cruiser.

Police say the officer suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash.

“My leg hurts, and he just hit his head inside,” the officer who was hit by the vehicle said inside the cruiser. “But we’re all 10-4.”

“Didn’t even see it coming,” he continued. “Like you cannot drive that fast.

“No, like it wasn’t like we got just a bumping, we got creamed,” his partner replied.

“I probably went 10 feet,” the officer said.

OPP urge drivers to stay off the roads in winter storms, and if driving is a must, to slow down.

“This was a split second where everything went wrong,“ OPP said. ”If you drive in whiteout conditions, you’re gambling with lives - yours and everyone else’s.”
