Huron OPP issue PSA following incidents involving aggressive dogs

Police in Huron County are reminding the public about proper pet ownership following several serious incidents involving aggressive dogs over recent months.

According to a news release from Huron County OPP, police have responded to several reports of aggressive dogs in Goderich, Bluewater, Central Huron, and South Huron in recent months.

Police say in some of these cases, “pedestrians were attacked, dogs have been injured and killed, and OPP officers have also been injured while attending calls for service.”

OPP are therefore reminding the public about the responsibilities pet owners have.

For example, information on the legal requirements and laws pertaining to dog ownership can be found in the Dog Owner Liability Act, while for more serious offences, the Criminal Code of Canada may apply.

Municipalities have also outlined legal requirements for animal owners in their respective by-laws, which can be found on each municipality’s website.

Anyone who encounters an aggressive animal or witnesses a situation that may endanger the public can contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122 to report it.
