Heat warning in effect, little relief on the way

Environment Canada has issued a yellow heat warning that is expected to last until at least Friday, with the possibility it could extend into the weekend.

The warnings stretch from Windsor-Essex, to Sarnia and up through Lambton County, London, Middlesex, Huron, Bruce and Grey counties.

Maximum temperatures of 30 to 32 C and humidex values of 37 to 42 are expected today. Heat and humidity will increase further beginning Tuesday with maximum temperatures of 31 to 36 C and humidex values of 40 to 45.

According to Environment Canada, minimum temperatures of 21 to 25 C will provide little relief from the heat.

The weather authority is reminding people to take action to protect yourself and others, and to watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion. Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue.

The Middlesex London Health Unit is urging residents to prepare, take precautions and check in on family, friends and neighbours, especially those who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.

Tips from the Middlesex-London Health Unit

• Drink plenty of water and natural juices throughout the day, even if you don’t feel very thirsty
• Never leave a child or pet in a parked car or sleeping outside in direct sunlight
• Avoid drinking caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, including coffee and cola
• When possible, avoid spending too much time outdoors. If you must be outside, seek shade as much as possible and plan outdoor activities in the early morning or evening
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors
• Keep shades or drapes drawn and blinds closed on the sunny side of your home
• Avoid turning on electric lights in your home
• Take a cool bath or shower periodically or cool down with cool, wet towels
• Avoid intense or moderately intense physical activity
• Use fans to draw cool air at night, but do not rely on a fan as a primary cooling device during extended periods of excessive heat
• Reduce the use of personal vehicles and unnecessary idling
• Avoid using oil-based paints and glues, pesticides, and gas-powered small engines
