Virtue and Moir say despite controversy, they wouldn't have changed coach

Olympic silver medallists Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue say they wouldn’t have changed a thing about their coaching staff, despite the suggestion that coach Marina Zoueva, who also trains American gold medallists Meryl Davis and Charlie White, wasn't in their corner.

The Canadian ice skating duo, who won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games, made waves on Tuesday, after Moir questioned Zoueva 's loyalty and complained about her split allegiance.

"We sometimes felt like (Zoueva) wasn't in our corner," Moir said during a press conference.

But speaking to CTV's Canada AM on Wednesday, Moir said that he was simply commenting on how difficult Zoueva's position as coach of the world's two top ice dancing teams would be.

"The biggest thing that we wanted to talk about was how, being more mature athletes, we didn't necessarily need the support that we needed in 2010," Moir said. "We love our coaching staff and we wouldn't change it for the world, and we didn't change it for a reason."

Despite skating a near-flawless performance in Monday's free dance, for which the duo earned a personal-best score, Virtue and Moir took home the Olympic silver medal. Their rivals Davis and White won gold by a wide margin.

"We'd be lying if we said we're weren’t disappointed to not have won the gold, especially since we wanted to bring that home to Canada and we didn't want to let anyone down," Virtue said.

But the pair added that they consider the Sochi Games a success.

"We're extremely happy about the way we performed," Moir said. "To us, we did everything right."

Virtue and Moir, who since 2009 have finished first or second in every event they've competed in, were expected to retire after the Sochi Games.

But Moir said Wednesday that they still haven't made a decision about their future plans.

"The goal here was gold," Moir said. "We sat on the kiss and cry last night and looked at each other and said if that is it then we're extremely proud of ourselves."

He continued: "We felt like we had the performance of our lives, so if that's the way it has to be, it seems fitting. But we don't know yet. We need to take a moment, relax a little bit reflect."
