Waterloo driver stopped by Guelph Police Service officers twice in less than five hours

A warning and a suspension from police wasn’t enough to keep an allegedly impaired driver off the roads in Guelph.

A Guelph Police Service officer was patrolling the Gordon Street and Gosling Gardens area on Sunday around 2:25 a.m. when she saw a driver using a cellphone and swerving toward oncoming traffic.

The driver was pulled over, and the officer said she could smell alcohol on his breath. She also spotted an open can of alcohol in the centre console.

After failing a roadside breath test, the man was taken to a police station where tests confirmed he had more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

Police also learned the same driver’s licence had been suspended for three days less than five hours earlier after a separate roadside test registered in the ‘warn’ range.
