Two Guelph men are facing impaired-driving charges after separate incidents Monday, including one who police say stopped to ask officers for help while experiencing apparent drug-induced hallucinations. Just after 9:30 a.m., Guelph police officers on bicycle patrol near the skateboard park at Wellington Street West and Edinburgh Road South saw a pickup truck stopped on a pedestrian path. Police said the driver got out and asked officers for help, claiming he could hear people screaming in the bushes. Officers said the driver continued to report hearing the screams, although they could not hear anything, and believed he could see people in the bushes. The man was arrested and taken to the police station, where an officer trained in drug evaluation concluded his ability to operate a vehicle was impaired by drugs, police said. A 51-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation. Later Monday, at about 9:45 p.m., an officer conducting speed enforcement on Gordon Street clocked a pickup travelling 67 km/h in a 40 km/h zone. “While speaking to the driver the officer detected an odour of alcohol and could see an open can of beer,” police said in a media release. “After failing a roadside breath test the driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.” A 34-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation and speeding.
