Guelph woman charged for driving around barricades and causing $100K in damage to police equipment

Police are reminding drivers to follow the rules of the road after a Guelph woman drove through a road closed sign and onto the scene of a fatal crash investigation.

On Friday, the driver of a pickup truck struck a family of three as they were crossing the street at Paisley Road and Alma Street North. The 38-year-old mother died in hospital from her injuries. Her 38-year-old husband and three-year-old daughter were released from the hospital later that same day. The driver of the pickup, a 19-year-old from Northern Ontario, remained at the scene of the crash.

During the investigation, road closed signs were put up at Paisley Road and Bagot Street.

Guelph Police said one driver ignored officers shouting for her to stop as she went around the sign and police cruisers. Her vehicle then entered the crash scene and hit a 3D scanner atop a tripod that was being used for the investigation. Police said it is now inoperable and the damage estimate is $100,000.

The 66-year-old woman was charged with careless driving.
